Quick answer: Welcome to Elderfield v1.0.1 introduced lost-tool recovery, Steam Deck improvements, and easier early progression on September 18, 2026. For a current installation, use v1.0.2 plus the September 23 Hotfix. The earlier Primary Storage, inventory, and original-shop checks and Full Screen ON + Stretch Screen OFF Deck settings remain useful starting points.

What changed with the September 18 update

Do not change five things at once. Load the affected save, note the current area and active task, then test the one system that brought you here. The most useful first checks are:

  1. Missing tool: inspect Primary Storage, player inventory, and the shop that originally sold the tool.
  2. Steam Deck stutter or frame drops: turn Full Screen on and Stretch Screen off, then revisit the same area.
  3. Blocked task: reopen the journal, speak to the named NPC again, and repeat only the final incomplete objective.
  4. Character missing: check the expected home or workplace at a sensible time before assuming the save is broken.
  5. Crash in a previously troublesome scene: reproduce it once on v1.0.1 and record the exact map or menu.

This sequence preserves evidence. If the problem disappears, you know which patch behavior mattered; if it remains, your report contains a build, location, and repeatable symptom instead of a vague description.

Recover a tool that disappeared because of a bug

The update adds a failsafe for tools lost through a bug. The official description gives three possible destinations: Primary Storage, the player inventory, or the original shop that sold the tool. It does not promise which destination every tool will use, so check all three before spending time searching unrelated maps.

For Molly’s early pickaxe route, keep the task and recovery questions separate. If Helping Molly never started, speak to Molly and follow the normal Copper Ore sequence. If the Rusty Pickaxe was received and later vanished, check the listed recovery destinations. The Rusty Pickaxe and Molly guide covers both paths without asking you to delete or edit a save.

The patch says the failsafe replaces tools lost to a bug. It does not document every intentional discard case, duplicated tool, or modified save. If all three locations are empty, keep the affected save, capture the journal and inventory, and report the exact tool name and task stage.

Use the new Steam Deck baseline before changing Proton

The developer describes significant Steam Deck performance work in v1.0.1 and recommends Full Screen ON with Stretch Screen OFF. Start there for stutter, frame drops, map transitions, or slow menus. Test the same area before and after the two display settings so the comparison means something.

This recommendation does not make the older Proton workaround useless; it changes its place in the decision tree. Proton is for a launch failure that matches the reported symptom, not the first response to ordinary frame pacing. The Steam Deck launch and performance guide separates display settings, launch crashes, and save-specific failures.

“Improved” is also not the same as “fixed on every Deck.” Steam still labels the game Verified, but a particular map, save, or SteamOS version can expose a narrower problem. Include that context when reporting a remaining issue.

Expect a gentler progression and combat curve

Several changes work together rather than acting as one universal difficulty reduction. Player damage increased slightly, enemy damage decreased, and many enemies in Mall Mines, Old Woods, Catacombs, and holiday encounters received lower stats. The EXP curve was reduced by about 30 percent, so the same activity should reach later levels sooner than it did at launch.

Craftable Copper-through-Platinum weapons and armor received stronger attack or defense bonuses, while many early forge recipes became cheaper. Copper recipes no longer require leather. Before grinding for a launch-version material list, open the current forge screen and recalculate what you actually need.

The v1.0.1 announcement intended to remove permanent stat loss from bad sleep rolls on Normal or lower. The September 22 update fixed cases where that loss still occurred; use the latest patch guide for the follow-up. Bad mining and gathering outcomes are also less likely, and debris deals less damage. These changes make older “prepare for permanent loss” advice unreliable for those difficulty settings. They do not establish the full rules of every difficulty or custom mode, so check the current selection screen for anything the patch does not specify.

Farm and fish with the changed rules in mind

Multi-tile hoeing and watering now run at twice their previous speed. That matters after you expand beyond the first small plot, but it does not change the basic order: clear, till, plant, water, and keep task crops until the journal advances. The update also fixes a bug where flower beds or special plots could consume a seed selected earlier. If you avoided those plots because of that symptom, test one low-value seed first on the updated build. The farming guide keeps the first Wheat route separate from later efficiency choices.

Fog Eels now appear slightly more often. Their location and bait requirement did not change in the announcement, so continue using a Leech at Lakefront and treat the adjustment as improved odds, not a guaranteed next cast. See Bait Locations if the rod has the wrong bait or you need another source.

Recheck blocked tasks, NPCs, and old crash reports

The update includes failsafes for Job Board tasks and fixes for NPC or task states involving Pumpkid, Abby, Ellie, and Adrian. A second hotfix specifically addresses Adrian’s Tentacle Cleanup task not progressing. If that task was blocked, update fully, reopen the journal, return to Adrian, and repeat the last required interaction before abandoning the save.

Several crash sources were addressed, including storage item movement, some radio tracks, fog or dust effects, non-English animal interactions, and an options-menu input with no active selection. An existing report may therefore be obsolete, but v1.0.1 does not prove every launch or in-game crash is solved. For a game that will not open at all, use the game won’t launch guide rather than deleting data at random.

What the two hotfixes add

Two same-day hotfixes followed the main update. One restores item-stat display in the equipment scene; the other fixes Tentacle Cleanup progression. Steam normally applies these automatically, but a player who left the client open may still need to restart Steam and allow the queued update to finish.

If your symptom exactly matches either hotfix, verify the download before changing equipment, repeating the whole quest chain, or loading an older save. If it does not match, the hotfix titles are not evidence that an unrelated problem is fixed.

Sources and verification method

The original September 19 review used the developer’s official Steam announcements, including the v1.0.1 changelog and both September 18 hotfixes. The article groups those changes by player decision and adds safe test sequences; it does not reproduce the announcement line by line.

Current in-game text remains the best authority for a specific task, recipe, or difficulty selection. When it differs from an older guide, record the installed build and prefer the updated interface while the discrepancy is investigated.

The October 2, 2026 review adds the current-update link and corrects the sleep claim against the September 22 follow-up; this remains a historical v1.0.1 guide.

Route checkpoints

Install the latest Steam update, record the installed build, then check one affected system at a time: lost-tool locations, Deck display settings, an active task, or the farming action that previously failed. Record the result before changing another variable.

Known limits

This page translates the official September 18 changelog into player decisions. It does not claim that every crash, performance problem, old save, or community-reported edge case is fixed.
