Quick answer: For your first reliable farm progress, speak to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse and follow The Farmer's Path. Clear only a small plot, remove its Ghost Tentacles with Cleansing Balm, till it with the Basic Gardening Hoe, plant and water Wheat, then show Hans one Wheat. The recorded task reward is a Grinder and access to Chef Elroy's recipe shop.

What v1.0.1 changes on the farm

The first-Wheat route below is unchanged, but v1.0.1 makes larger plots less tedious: multi-tile hoeing and watering now complete at twice their previous speed. That is a speed change, not permission to skip clearing, tilling, planting, or watering in the correct order. Expand only after you can maintain the plots you already use.

The update also fixes flower beds and other special plots sometimes consuming a seed that had been selected earlier. If you stopped using one because of that symptom, update first, select a cheap seed, and test a single plot. Confirm that the inventory count and planted crop agree before committing rare seeds; a fixed bug does not prove that every placement mistake has the same cause.

Finish your first Wheat task without overbuilding the farm

  1. Start with Hans, not a shop run. The Farmer's Path tells you to bring one Wheat to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse. Taking it first gives every early farm action a clear purpose.
  2. Open only the plot you need. Starting farm tiles are recorded as blocked by Ghost Tentacles. Remove a few with Cleansing Balm; a large clear-out consumes supplies before it creates any new progress.
  3. Till before planting. Use the Basic Gardening Hoe on the now-clear tile. A fallow tile cannot receive seed or fertilizer until it has been prepared.
  4. Plant, then water. The watering can works after a seed is in the tilled tile. Water each planted crop before the night changes.
  5. Keep one Wheat for the hand-in. Return to Hans after harvesting instead of selling or processing the first piece. The task asks for the crop itself.

The community crop reference currently lists Wheat as a 5g seed that needs four nights of growth: a crop planted on day 1 should be ready on day 5, not day 4. Treat that as a planning aid, then trust the seed card and growth state in your own save if an update changes it.

Watering is the early-game bottleneck, not crop death

Missing one watering does not permanently destroy a crop according to the current crop reference; it prevents that crop from advancing during the following night. That makes the decision simple: water the plots you have already planted before taking a long trip, but do not feel forced to spend scarce resources opening a huge field.

The day changes at midnight even if you do not sleep. If you planted late and are unsure whether you watered, check the plot before midnight rather than assuming the next morning will fix it. A small, consistently watered patch reaches Hans's Wheat objective more predictably than a large patch that repeatedly misses growth nights.

Plan crops by growth nights, not just the calendar day

Before buying a seed, answer two small questions: how many watered nights does it need, and how many nights remain in its season? This matters most near day 28. A crop that needs four nights is not a four-day purchase on the last four calendar days of a season; it needs four successful overnight growth checks before it can be harvested. The current reference says an out-of-season crop withers when the season changes, so leave a buffer instead of planting right against the boundary.

For an early save, use this simple planning rule:

  • Plant only the number of plots you can remember to water before midnight.
  • Use Wheat as the first test crop because it also satisfies Hans's active request.
  • Keep the next day open for one nearby errand rather than abandoning the farm for a long, unrelated expedition.
  • After the first harvest, expand one decision at a time: more plots, a new seed, Scarecrow coverage, or a processing goal.

This is not a claim that Wheat is always the most profitable crop. It is the most useful first choice when The Farmer's Path is active because one harvest advances both your farming routine and a named task reward.

Solve the three most common crop setbacks

What you seeLikely reasonBest next action
You cannot place a seedThe tile still has tentacles or has not been tilledUse Cleansing Balm, then the Basic Gardening Hoe; try the seed again.
The crop looks unchanged the next dayIt was not watered before that nightWater it today; the crop should resume progress on a later watered night.
A growing crop disappeared after a season changeIt did not belong to the new seasonCheck the seed's current season before planting near day 28.
A young crop vanished while ripe crops remainIt was outside a Scarecrow's rangePut growing plots inside Scarecrow coverage; the reference says crows do not eat fully grown crops.

This is intentionally a troubleshooting table, not a profit chart. A crop's tooltips and your current season are better decision tools than a copied sale-price list that may be changed by balancing.

Use the first harvest to unlock a useful loop

The Farmer's Path reward connects farming to cooking: the Grinder gives you a processing tool, while Chef Elroy's recipe shop opens another reason to keep ingredients. That is a better early target than planting every available seed at once.

Once Hans has accepted the Wheat, decide what your next day needs:

Check flower watering after v1.0.2

v1.0.2 fixes the watering can's charge distance not building at the updated speed when watering flowers. If the same tool seemed slower on flower plots, update and compare it on that plot before crafting a replacement. The current patch guide explains the change; it does not change the Wheat task or establish new crop-growth times.

Route checkpoints

On v1.0.1, open The Farmer's Path with Farmer Hans, prepare one small plot, grow Wheat, and return one Wheat. Test multi-tile hoeing or watering separately and use one cheap seed when rechecking a special plot.

Known limits

The task route is community source-checked. The faster multi-tile actions and special-plot fix are developer documented, but this site has not benchmarked every tool tier or plot type.
