Quick answer: Equip a fishing rod with bait accepted by that body of water, cast and wait for a bite, then press repeatedly only while the moving arrow overlaps the blue zone.
Get your first fishing rod
The supplied fishing reference identifies Fisherman Herb at the Lakefront as the source of the Old Fishing Rod when you first speak to him. The related Casting your Line task begins with the rod and three Worms, then asks you to show Herb a Ghost Flounder and a Fog Eel.
If fishing is not available yet, reach the Lakefront and talk to Herb before searching shops for a rod.
Equip the right bait
Select or use the rod to check its bait slot, then match bait to the body of water. The supplied reference records these combinations:
| Water | Recorded bait |
|---|---|
| Lakefront | Worm or Leech |
| Sewers | Maggot |
| Mall Administrator's Office | Bug |
| Old Woods campsite | Dragonfly; Lugworm during the Fishing Contest |
| Catacombs | Firefly |
This is a location rule, not merely a quality bonus. If nothing bites, verify the water and bait pairing first.
Complete the minigame
- Stand at a valid fishing point with the rod equipped.
- Confirm that the rod holds bait accepted by that water.
- Cast and wait; do not start rapid input before the bite.
- When the meter appears, press repeatedly only while the arrow overlaps the blue bar.
- Pause when the arrow leaves the target, then resume on the next pass.
Short, controlled bursts are safer than continuous clicking. The goal is to fill the progress bar without wasting inputs outside the blue zone.
Choose a fishing trip before leaving
Fishing works best as a planned route. Decide whether the goal is a journal request, a particular body of water, or general catches before consuming bait. For Herb's early Casting your Line task, the supplied task reference names a Ghost Flounder and a Fog Eel. Keep requested fish in inventory until the journal updates or you have shown them to the task giver.
Different areas use different bait, so carrying every bait is not necessary. Bring the rod plus the bait for the destination and leave a little inventory space for catches. If you intend to place Crab Pots as well, carry their bait separately so you do not accidentally consume the entire supply with the rod.
Understand rods and progression
The supplied fishing reference lists three rod tiers:
| Rod | Recorded fishing level | Source in the reference |
|---|---|---|
| Old Fishing Rod | 1 | Gift from Fisherman Herb |
| Sturdy Fishing Rod | 2 | Forged in the Workshop |
| Quality Fishing Rod | 3 | Forged in the Workshop |
The first priority is not immediately forging the best rod. Learn bait matching and timing with the Old Fishing Rod, then upgrade when your fishing progress and Workshop access support it. An upgraded rod does not make incompatible bait valid in the wrong water.
Manage bait without wasting it
Worms and Leeches are associated with the Lakefront in the supplied reference, while later waters use more specialized bait. Keep bait grouped mentally by destination:
- Lakefront: the beginner-friendly place to learn with Worms or Leeches.
- Sewers: bring Maggots rather than assuming Lakefront bait works.
- Mall office water: use Bugs.
- Old Woods campsite: use Dragonflies; the contest-specific Lugworm has a narrower purpose.
- Catacombs: Fireflies are the recorded option.
When the game adds or updates a bait, the rod's own “Use” or bait-check interaction is more current than an old list. Treat the table as a route planner, then verify in the current build.
Why fishing may not work
- No rod: speak to Fisherman Herb at the Lakefront.
- No bite: recheck that the bait belongs to this water.
- The meter stalls: time presses to the blue target rather than holding or clicking continuously.
- A task does not update: confirm the requested fish and quality in the journal, then return with the fish still in inventory.
If inputs feel inconsistent, first test one full arrow pass without pressing. That shows the target's movement clearly. On the next pass, use a steady rhythm only inside the zone. Changing display or performance settings may help if visible stutter makes timing unreliable, but do not assume every missed input is a frame-rate problem.
Crab pots are different
A Crab Pot is placed in an outdoor water source, loaded with bait, and collected the next day. It does not use the active timing minigame. Treat pots as passive overnight collection and the rod as an active activity.
Crab Pots are useful when the route already takes you past outdoor water. Place one, add any accepted bait, and build collection into the next day's travel plan. If you will not return to that area soon, active fishing may be a better use of the bait because the catch is resolved immediately.
Sell, cook, gift, or keep?
The supplied material records fish as sale goods, recipe ingredients, gifts, and task requirements. Use this order when a catch is new:
- keep it if the journal names it;
- reserve one if you have not discovered its cooking or relationship use;
- compare whether the money is more useful than the item today;
- sell surplus catches only after the first three checks.
This is especially important for unusual quality requirements. A task asking for a particular quality is not completed by the ordinary version of the same fish.
Fishing questions
Why did another player's bait work somewhere else?
Check the build date, location, and whether the catch came from a rod, Crab Pot, event, or treasure roll. Those are separate systems even if the result is described as “fishing.”
Does clicking faster always help?
No. Inputs build progress while the arrow overlaps the blue zone. Controlled timing is more useful than uninterrupted clicking.
Is every fish available all day?
The supplied tables include season and time fields for individual fish, but this first guide does not reproduce them without a complete launch-build test. If a specific fish will not appear, change time or season only after confirming bait and location.
Source note
The control flow and bait locations were summarized from the supplied fishing material, which references the community-maintained Fishing entry. It was source-checked on September 11, 2026; exact fish tables and sale prices are intentionally omitted until they can be tested against the launch build. Fishing as a core activity is also confirmed by the official Steam page.
