Quick answer: For an early fishing trip, buy a Tier 1 Bait Pack from the General Store, then use the bait that matches your destination. Worms and Leeches are the Lakefront options; other waters need their own bait rather than a better rod or faster timing.

v1.0.1 note: Fog Eels now appear slightly more often, but the useful route is still Leech + Lakefront. “Slightly more often” does not mean guaranteed on the next cast, so verify the equipped bait before spending another day or moving to the wrong water.

Start with the General Store, not a random shore

The most dependable early source recorded for fishing bait is the Tier 1 Bait Pack at the General Store. It gives a random bait result, so it is a practical way to stock up before the Lakefront rather than a guarantee of one exact bait on every purchase. Do not plan a task around an assumed pack outcome: open the pack first, read the item name, and then decide which water you can fish that day.

The early Casting your Line task is also a useful starting point. The current task reference says Fisherman Herb gives the Old Fishing Rod and some bait when the task begins, so speak to him at the Lakefront before spending all your money on packs. Keep the task fish in your inventory until you have shown them to Herb; selling a requested catch too early creates an avoidable extra trip.

The store and the task solve different problems. The task gets a new player fishing, while Bait Packs give you a repeatable option when you need a Lakefront bait later. This guide deliberately does not list a permanent price because shop stock and prices are the part players can check directly in their own current save.

Where each bait comes from

Use the following list as a route plan, not as a promise that every event, shop rotation, or random pack result will be identical in every build. The official community Wiki records Worms from Wormsprout plants or lower pack rolls, and Leeches from middle pack rolls or Mall Mine foraging. That makes a Tier 1 pack the simplest common first stop when the Lakefront task asks for a Fog Eel.

BaitRecorded ways to obtain itBest reason to keep it

DragonflyCatch bugs in Old WoodsOld Woods campsite water
MaggotGive Mystery Meat to Maggot Man during the relevant eventSewers fishing
FireflyCatch the red floating lights in the CatacombsCatacombs fishing

Some of those paths require an area or event you may not have unlocked. If that is your situation, do not abandon a current task to chase late-game bait. Fish at the water your available bait supports, progress the journal, and return when the new route is naturally open.

Match bait to water before you cast

The quickest check is to choose the water first, then pack only the bait that belongs there. The recorded pairings are Worm or Leech at the Lakefront, Maggot in the Sewers, Bug in the Mall Administrator's Office, Dragonfly at the Old Woods campsite, and Firefly in the Catacombs. These are compatibility rules: using a higher-tier rod does not make the wrong bait valid.

Your rod can help you avoid an unnecessary walk. The item reference says to select Use on the Old or Sturdy Fishing Rod to check bait, so confirm the loaded bait before travelling to a remote spot. If your goal is a specific fish, also read the current task text; bait is only one part of a catch condition, and old fish tables may not describe the build you are playing.

For the first Lakefront loop, carry the rod, a small amount of Worms or Leeches, recovery items, and clear inventory space. This is more efficient than carrying every bait you own. It also makes it obvious whether a failed attempt is a timing problem, a wrong-water problem, or simply the wrong bait.

A practical route for the first requested fish

If Herb asks for a Ghost Flounder and a Fog Eel, split the task into two deliberate attempts. Check the pack result or your planted Wormsprout harvest first; a Worm supports the Ghost Flounder route, while a Leech supports the Fog Eel route. Return to the General Store only when you actually need another pack, not after every unsuccessful cast.

At the Lakefront, equip the rod, verify the bait through its Use interaction, and cast from a valid fishing point. During the minigame, build progress only while the moving arrow overlaps the blue target; frantic input outside that window does not turn a wrong bait into a valid one. The fishing tutorial covers the timing and rod progression, while this page is for the separate question of obtaining the bait.

The September 8 Demo changelog fixed the rate applied to bait-exclusive fish, including Leeches. That makes old anecdotes about catch frequency especially poor evidence for a release guide. Treat the current in-game task, the rod interaction, and the official announcements as more current than a remembered number of casts.

If you have bait but nothing bites

First, compare the water and bait against the list above. Second, make sure you are using a fishing rod rather than trying to place a Crab Pot; pots are a separate overnight system and still need suitable bait. Third, check whether the journal asks for a particular fish, quality, time, or other condition before assuming the bait has failed.

If the bait name does not appear in the rod check, stop and load it before casting again. If it appears but the result still seems impossible, take a screenshot of the rod, location, task stage, and game version. That is much more useful in a bug report than “fishing is broken,” and it avoids repeating a route based on an old Demo discussion.

Do not buy every rare bait merely to test it at the Lakefront. Save destination-specific bait for the destination that uses it, then replenish common Lakefront supplies through the store or Wormsprouts. A small, deliberate bait kit keeps fishing from turning into an expensive detour.

Use Bug bait for the Basic Axe task route

Adrian's Basic Axe task chain sends you to the Mall office worker for a Stalktopus; the worker supplies three Bugs at the start. Keep a Bug loaded for that Mall-water attempt instead of reusing a Lakefront Leech. The v1.0.2 fishing fixes address Weird Fish and Lucky Reel, while this bait pairing remains a separate acquisition check.

Sources and version boundary

The acquisition list was cross-checked on September 19, 2026 against the developer-recognized Welcome to Elderfield Wiki Items page and Tasks page. The Fog Eel adjustment comes from the developer's v1.0.1 announcements. Community pages can lag after a patch, so stock, events, and random outcomes should be rechecked in your current save.

The September 8 Demo changelog is cited only to explain why bait-exclusive catch anecdotes need caution; it is not presented as a full-game 1.0 patch note. For controls and water pairings, continue with the Welcome to Elderfield fishing tutorial.

Route checkpoints

On v1.0.1, start Casting Your Line with Herb, open a Tier 1 Bait Pack, then inspect the rod before casting. For Fog Eel checks, use a Leech at Lakefront and record time, bait, and successful casts.

Known limits

This site has not independently measured catch rates or every shop rotation. v1.0.1 documents only a slight Fog Eel appearance increase, not a fixed number of casts or guaranteed result.
