Skeleton Key and Gate Key Locations
Find Welcome to Elderfield Basic Skeleton Keys and the Gatekeeper's second Gate Key, understand their uses, and avoid searching the wrong location.

Quick answer: A Basic Skeleton Key is random, reusable only once, and opens ordinary locks; the Gatekeeper's second Gate Key is a specific quest purchase from an NPC in the General Store.
Basic Skeleton Key
Developer Chris Cote explained in an April 2025 Steam answer that Basic Skeleton Keys can appear randomly in many containers and activities, including garbage, chests, boxes, and fishing treasure. That means a key seen in a video may not appear in the same spot in your save.
The supplied item reference also records several fixed or event-linked possibilities:
- answer “knowledge” during one of Edwin's events;
- check Old Man Jackson's closet;
- open chests in the Mall Mines.
The item is consumed when it opens a compatible basic lock, so do not spend the first one merely to test a door unless the room serves your current goal.
Where to look for more Basic Skeleton Keys
Because the ordinary key is a loot item, search broad repeatable sources before assuming a particular chest is required. The developer-listed sources form a practical priority order: open containers encountered during normal exploration, inspect garbage and boxes, then include fishing treasure in longer sessions. Fixed or event-linked sources from the supplied reference are useful backups, but they can depend on dialogue choices or access to later areas.
| Source type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Garbage, boxes, and chests | Random chance; another player's exact result may not repeat |
| Fishing treasure | Random reward while using the fishing system |
| Edwin event answer | A conditional reward tied to choosing “knowledge” |
| Old Man Jackson's closet | A fixed reference location once that space is accessible |
| Mall Mines chests | Chest opportunities connected to dungeon exploration |
Search during activities you already need rather than resetting around one container. The supplied developer response describes randomness but does not publish a drop percentage, so any precise farming-rate claim would be guesswork.
Gatekeeper's second Gate Key
The Gatekeeper task uses three ordered quest keys. In the developer-marked answer supplied with the research:
- the first key is in the Burgers Burgers kitchen in the Mall food court;
- the second key is bought from an NPC in the local General Store;
- the third key is on a counter in the lower office of the Mall back hallways.
If you searched the back offices for the second key, you were searching the third key's area. Go back to the General Store and check the available NPC interaction or purchase tied to the active task.
Keep the two key systems separate
The similar names create most of the confusion. A Basic Skeleton Key is a consumable general-purpose item for compatible locks. A Gate Key belongs to the Gatekeeper task and has a numbered place in that quest. Finding a Skeleton Key does not advance the numbered chain, and locating the third Gate Key early does not substitute for buying the second one.
Before following a video, compare its on-screen item name with your journal. Search results may shorten both items to “key,” while the game distinguishes their purpose. The Stone Tower seal is also part of a progression chain and should not be treated as another Basic Skeleton Key door.
Gate Key route in order
For the first key, search the Burgers Burgers kitchen rather than the public seating area of the food court. For the second, return to town and interact with the relevant General Store NPC; the source describes a purchase, so searching shelves and floor tiles is the wrong method. For the third, go back to the Mall and reach the lower office through the back hallways, then inspect the counter.
Complete and return each stage as the journal requests. The numbered order matters because a later object can exist in a place that your current task does not yet recognize. If a purchase option is absent, the most likely check is the active objective and the hand-in for the preceding key—not another random Skeleton Key hunt.
If the key is missing
- Confirm that the Gatekeeper task has advanced to the correct numbered key.
- Re-read the journal after returning the previous key.
- For the General Store key, check the NPC rather than floor loot.
- For a Basic Skeleton Key, search multiple loot sources; its random nature means another player's location is not guaranteed.
- Keep in mind that the developer answers above date from pre-release builds. If 1.0 behavior differs, check official announcements before assuming a save is broken.
Before using or reporting a key
Save the exact item name, current task line, and location. For a random Skeleton Key, note which loot source produced it and whether the lock consumed it. For a Gate Key, note its number and whether the previous stage was handed in. These details separate an unlucky random search from a progression gate or a genuine release-build issue.
Do not discard a unique task key because it resembles a common inventory object. Likewise, do not promise another player that a random key will spawn in the container shown in your save. The reliable distinction is purpose: ordinary Skeleton Keys open compatible locks once, while Gate Keys advance one named task in sequence.
That distinction is the fastest way to resume progress.
