Welcome to Elderfield Catacombs: Materials and Power
On this page+
Quick answer: Mine Dense Gold Ore in the Catacombs Mines with a Quality Pickaxe or better, then process it into Gold Plate in a Blast Kiln. Hard Bones become Bone Ingots in the same machine. Start power with Klaus's Water Wheel: its 50 Energy meets both recipes' requirement, so you can make these materials before crafting a Generator.
The first-kiln route at a glance
Still blocked by Carlos, hardened bones or a barred passage? Start with Catacombs hammers and floor progression, then return here for the material and power route.
Catacombs F3 · Bus Stop branch
Enter with Wire Cutters and mine with Quality Pickaxe or better.
Dense Gold Ore for Gold Plates
Farmhouse · Tinker's Desk
Finish the second house expansion and craft the Blast Kiln.
Kiln placed in Farm or Ranch
Farm pond · Water Wheel
Buy Klaus's 15,000g contract and complete the commission.
50 Energy for Gold Plate and Bone Ingot
Blast Kiln · First batch
Use 2 Dense Gold Ore, 5 Hard Bones, and 42 Coal.
2 Gold Plates + 5 Bone Ingots
Generator · Battery
Craft it with the other required bars, then feed a Battery.
Wheel + Generator = 100 Energy for Steel
Reach the mines, not just the Catacombs rooms
The Town entrance is left of the Church. For the deeper door on that route, the Catacombs F2 Key comes from Adrian's Tree Branch Cleanup task. It is different from the Catacombs Mine Key used later inside the mining route. Keep the name of the blocked door and required key together when reading the journal.
Once on Catacombs F3, work toward the bottom-left Bus Stop area and use Wire Cutters to enter the mines. The Catacombs Mines reference places this access point there. Exploring skeletal residences without entering that branch explains why a long Catacombs session can produce no Dense Gold.
For the mine's back gate, find Adam in the Forsaken Settlement and accept The Strange Orb. Take his orb to the darkest part of the Old Woods, use it, defeat the creature, then return its skull to Adam. His reward is the Catacombs Mine Key. Follow this task rather than searching the residential floors for more F2 keys. The Tasks reference and key-item record separate these locks.
Bring a Quality Pickaxe to collect Dense Gold
The current Dense Gold Ore record specifies Quality Pickaxe or better. You do not need a Superior Pickaxe just to collect this ingredient. That distinction breaks another apparent loop: Dense Gold can help supply later upgrades without requiring the resulting tool first.
The same record lists 10 swings with Quality Pickaxe, or 8 with Superior Pickaxe. A node surviving the first hit is expected; check the equipped tool before treating repeated hits as an access problem.
Bring Dense Gold Ore, not ordinary Gold Ore: the Blast Kiln recipe requires the dense variety.
For Bone Ingots, collect Hard Bones, not ordinary Bones or Crushed Bones. The Hard Bones record lists Catacombs enemies such as Failed Skeletons, Boneflies, and Skeleton Mages as sources. Treat drops as opportunities during the trip, not a guaranteed reward from the very next fight.
Unlock the Tinker's Desk and build the Blast Kiln
Visit Klaus for the second Farmhouse size upgrade, after completing the first. His current renovation record lists 150 Hardwood and 10,000g and confirms that it unlocks the Tinker's Desk. If the desk is already unlocked, check its crafting panel directly.
The Blast Kiln recipe uses 50 Stone, 20 Iron Bars, 2 Platinum Bars, and 5 Green Crystals at the Tinker's Desk. Check the four material totals before committing to the mining trip. Its recipe uses bars, not raw Iron or Platinum Ore.
Place the kiln in Farm or Ranch, then check its input and Energy panel.
Buy the Water Wheel before relying on a Generator
Klaus's shop record lists Contract: Water Wheel for 15,000g. It commissions a wheel at the Farm pond and provides 50 Energy. Complete the commission and check the farm's Energy before processing your first dense materials.
The Generator itself needs processed materials, including 2 Gold Plates and 5 Bone Ingots. That makes it a later power source for this route. Starting with the Water Wheel lets you produce those ingredients without requiring the Generator first.
If you still need both the desk expansion and the wheel, their listed cash total is 25,000g, plus the renovation's Hardwood and the kiln's materials. This is a preparation subtotal, not the cost of every earlier house upgrade or the whole dungeon. If you already own one part, remove it from your shopping budget.
Energy is a threshold; Coal is consumed
For these first two recipes, the farm must have 50 Energy available. That value is checked rather than spent per item. Coal is the consumable fuel, so larger batches need more Coal without needing 50 additional Energy for every unit.
| Your goal | Put into the Blast Kiln | Coal per output | Energy needed | Listed processing time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Gold Plate | 1 Dense Gold Ore | 6 | 50 | 1 in-game hour |
| 1 Bone Ingot | 1 Hard Bones | 6 | 50 | 1 in-game hour |
| 1 Steel Bar | 1 Dense Iron Ore | 12 | 100 | 1 in-game hour |
Steel is the next power gate. One 50-Energy wheel does not meet its 100-Energy requirement. Add enough generation before processing Dense Iron Ore; filling your bag with more Coal alone does not fix insufficient Energy.
For another batch, calculate Coal = 6 × (Gold Plates + Bone Ingots) + 12 × Steel Bars. Reserve one matching input item for each output. The following budgets count kiln fuel only:
| Batch you want | Inputs to reserve | Coal | Energy checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator's 2 plates + 5 ingots | 2 Dense Gold Ore + 5 Hard Bones | 42 | 50 |
| 5 plates + 5 ingots | 5 Dense Gold Ore + 5 Hard Bones | 60 | 50 |
| Generator materials + 3 Steel Bars | 2 Dense Gold Ore + 5 Hard Bones + 3 Dense Iron Ore | 78 | 50 for the first seven outputs, then 100 for Steel |
For the last row, make the plates and ingots first, build and power the Generator, then process Steel. The Generator's other bars and Battery are additional requirements.
Turn the first materials into the next power step
The current Generator recipe also needs 10 Iron Bars and 4 Void Crystal Bars, alongside the two Gold Plates and five Bone Ingots. Check all four ingredients at the Tinker's Desk before using your first processed materials on something else.
A Generator adds 50 Energy while powered by a Battery, and that contribution ends the next morning. Combined with the Water Wheel's 50, that reaches the 100 needed for Steel while the Generator is active. Check it again after a day change if the same recipe suddenly stops running.
When the kiln still will not process an item
| What you see | Fix this checkpoint |
|---|---|
| Can explore Catacombs but find no dense ore | Take the F3 Bus Stop branch into Catacombs Mines with Wire Cutters |
| Dense Gold node does not break | Equip Quality Pickaxe or better and finish the required swings |
| Tinker's Desk is unavailable | Complete Klaus's first house upgrade, then the second expansion |
| Gold Plate or Bone Ingot recipe will not start | Check 50 Energy, the exact input name, and six Coal per output |
| Steel works one day and stops the next | Check 100 Energy again and replenish the Generator's Battery |
Check the input name, the current Energy, the Coal available for the whole batch, and the machine placement. Reducing a batch can solve a fuel shortage; it cannot reduce a recipe's Energy threshold. Also leave time for processing and check for finished output before feeding another item.
Ancientwood can be processed into five Coal at 50 Energy, but the mine reference requires a Superior Axe to chop it. Treat that as a later replenishment loop, not your only fuel plan for the first kiln run.
Mine access, pickaxe swings, the second expansion, kiln recipes, the Water Wheel contract, and Generator power were rechecked October 10, 2026 against the linked records. The batch budgets are calculated from those recipes. An older developer answer confirms Dense Gold's mine-and-kiln pairing. Install v1.0.2 and the September 23 hotfix for the mining and existing-save shop corrections.

Route checkpoints
Reach the Catacombs Mines with Wire Cutters and a Quality Pickaxe, collect Dense Gold Ore, commission the Water Wheel, then check 50 Energy and six Coal per Gold Plate or Bone Ingot at the Blast Kiln.
Known limits
This is a source-reviewed material and processing route, not an independently replayed full dungeon walkthrough. Current Wiki records supply tool gates, recipes, and power requirements; exact layouts and save-specific access still need an in-game check.
