Welcome to Elderfield Catacombs: Hammers and Floor Progression
On this page+
Quick answer: To get past the Catacombs floor blocked by hardened bones, finish Carlos's Feed the Mold task: accept it on 2F, collect 10 Living Bones, return ready for the Gravemoss Colony fight, and win to receive a Large Hammer. Interact with the bone blockage near Carlos to use it. Small Hammers open stone doors; Large Hammers break hardened bones; Wire Cutters clear barred paths. Each opening consumes one matching tool.

Open the onward floor passage
The main entrance is west of the Church. If the gate there still asks for the Catacombs F2 Key, return to Adrian: it is the reward for Tree Branch Cleanup, after the Ancient Tree objective in Old Woods. Defeating the tree is only the objective; speak to Adrian to collect the key. His earlier Tentacle Cleanup starts the Basic Axe route.
Get Carlos's Large Hammer
- Speak to Carlos on Catacombs 2F and accept Feed the Mold. Do this before farming enemies: Living Bones are tied to the active collection step.
- Collect ten Living Bones from Catacombs enemies. The task and item records list skeleton encounters, including Failed Skeletons and Skullcrawlers. Check the item name: ordinary Bones and Hard Bones do not satisfy this hand-in.
- Prepare before returning. The hand-in triggers combat against Gravemoss Colony and its accompanying Gravemoss. Heal and refill MP first. The Colony's enemy record lists a Light weakness; use a Light option you already have rather than buying unrelated tool upgrades to solve this fight.
- Win the encounter and check for the Large Hammer. The current task record says the hand-in uses every Living Bone carried, so the required ten are enough for this objective.
- Find the actual passage near Carlos. Release-player directions place the bone pile behind him, toward the right-hand back wall. Approach it from the walkable path and interact. Nearby decoration and red torchlight can make other bones look similar.
If you already hold the hammer, start with the final step. Searching every stone side door can consume Small Hammers without moving this particular floor gate.
Match the blockage to the tool
| What blocks you | Matching item | Merchant price per opening | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone door | Small Hammer | 1,500g | Keep one for a route you have chosen instead of opening every side room immediately |
| Hardened or solid bone pile | Large Hammer | 2,500g | Carlos's task supplies the hammer for his nearby passage |
| Thin metal bars or wires | Wire Cutters | 3,500g | Budget separately; owning either hammer does not clear bars |
The Small Hammer, Large Hammer and Wire Cutters records list these purchase prices at the Skeleton Merchant, with stock of 7, 3 and 3 respectively at the review date. The tools are consumed by individual openings, so buying one is not a permanent unlock for all matching doors.
Budget example: buying one of each costs 7,500g. If you earn a Small Hammer from a task and the Large Hammer from Carlos, the same three-tool set only needs the 3,500g Wire Cutters purchase. This compares tool costs only, excluding food and any earlier unlocks. Use the rewards below before spending on duplicates.
Use task rewards before buying another hammer
| Task and contact | What to complete | Tool outcome or prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| Lost Supplies — Tobias, 2F | Collect three Lost Supplies from the task's skeleton encounters and return them | Small Hammer |
| Secrets of the Catacombs — Bill, 2F | Report at the three- and six-Mystery milestones | Two Small Hammers across the task; collect rewards between stages |
| Skeletal Survey — Jess, 2F | Recover Survey Documents and return them | Small Hammer, but Wire Cutters are needed to reach the documents |
| Feed the Mold — Carlos, 2F | Bring ten Living Bones and win the encounter | Large Hammer for the nearby bone gate |
| False Idols — Denzel, 3F | Learn, craft and deliver Kaal Idol | Large Hammer; needs processed materials, so it is a later route |
Jess's task is not a free solution to your first Wire Cutters shortage: it pays back a Small Hammer after you have crossed the barred route. Denzel's idol needs Bone Ingots among its materials; use the Blast Kiln and power route when that becomes your blocker.
If the floor still will not open
| Your situation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Carlos does not accept your bones | Confirm Feed the Mold is active and count Living Bones, not another bone material |
| You handed in bones but have no hammer | Complete the triggered Gravemoss encounter and its reward dialogue |
| You have a Large Hammer but nothing happens | Return to Carlos's nearby hardened-bone passage and approach the interactable pile from its access path |
| You keep finding bars rather than bone piles | Use Wire Cutters for that branch; keep the hammer for a bone blockage |
| You opened side rooms and ran out of tools | Check unfinished task rewards and remaining merchant stock before planning another opening |
| You reached 3F but need Dense Gold | Take the bottom-left Bus Stop branch toward the mines; follow materials and mine access |
At 3F, choose between your active story objective, another task reward and the mine branch. That is a better spending plan than clearing every unopened room before checking what your journal actually needs.
